I was given several ebooks to read and review as part of The Homeschool Magazine Crew.  We are given free product in exchange for our honest opinion, but are not paid for our reviews.  I thought it would be fitting if I let my own children review some of these and give their thoughts and opinions:

Rainbow Sheep, by Kim Chatel

Kim Chatel uses felting to illustrate this story about a herd of sheep on the hillside and a sad rainbow who needs cheering up.  The story is charming and delightful, but the pictures are what make this story fascinating.

Here is what my lovely 11-yo daughter thought about the book, “It was a pretty well written story.  I loved the ending a lot!  I thought it was really imaginative.  I loved how the girl helped the rainbow shine!  I thought the ending was really unexpected.  Great short-long kids’ story!”

If you are a crafty person this may be of interest to you. There is some good info on getting started with felting (not my cup of tea, but then I am not craft girl, either).

To purchase this book via PDF ebook, go to their website and order for $5.00.  Also comes in CD version for $9.95 plus $5.95 S&H, paperback version for $10.95 plus $6.95 S&H, or DVD version for $9.95 plus $5.95 S&H.

No Bones About It!  The Sum of Our Parts Series (Book 1) by Bill Kirk

This book would make a great addition to your Science/Health lessons.  This really did have some great info and the illustrations are really cool (especially for boys).  The material is presented in a way that makes learning easy and fun.  It has cool  “Factoids” and the text has a rhyming pattern, which makes reading a breeze.

Reviewed by Seth, age 8  “It was long, but I loved it. It told me things that I did not know. For instance, I did not know that we have 206 bones. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong. I did know, however, that without our bones we would be wobbly, gobbly goop. I did not know that without your legs your spine would be crooked and stuff. Our spine is the longest bone in our body. I didn’t know that our skull does not have any ears. The pictures in the story are amazing. I wonder how they figure that stuff out? The author is Bill Kirk and Eugene Ruble is the artist.”

This ebook version can be purchased for $5.00 online, as well as ebook CD for $9.95 plus $5.95 S&H or printed book for $10.95 plus $6.95 S&H.

Maybe We Are Flamingos, by Safari Sue Thurman, Illustrated by Kevin Collier

This is a cute story about two flamingos who think they are in the wrong family because they are not pink like the others.  They learn from their mother that it takes one year for them to turn pink, and their color is determined by the foods they eat.  They were so delighted to learn this that they began drawing pictures of what they might look like if they only ate certain foods. Good story stressing that each of us are different but it is not our appearance that makes us special.

Here is what Sean had to say (6 years old) “I learned that whatever you think you are you are still in the right family.  I thought the candy cane flamingo was funny.

Andy and Spirit Go to the Fair, by Mary Jean Kelso, Illustrations by K.C. Snider

This is a sweet story about Andy (a young boy confined to a wheelchair), who as part of his 4-H club, has made it to the state fair!  His persistence and confidence in his albino horse enables Andy to overcome multiple obstacles to fulfill his dream of competing.  Mary Kelso does a great job of articulating the atmosphere of the state fair on your senses.  A truly inspiring story!
