I had the pleasure of reading Sarah’s Wish by Jim Baumgardner.  Jim is one of those personable writers that feels like family.  First of all, he hand signs each of his books before they are shipped and has such great personal customer service.  His correspondence through email was humorous and thoughtful.

Anyway, to the book.  Sarah’s Wish is a captivating story about a young girl who loses her mother in a tragic accident.  She is left an orphan with a life altering secret:  Her mother was a “conductor” in the underground railroad!  This is a touching story of Sarah’s journey of carrying on her mother’s legacy.  Read this book to catch a glimpse into the life of Sarah as she dodges slave catchers and all sorts of adventures.  This is the first book in a three part series, which also includes “Sarah’s Promise” and “Sarah’s Escape.”  I am looking forward to reading these two books as well.

I read this book with Emi, but half-way through the book she caught me reading it by myself.  She hit me with my pillow and yelled, “Hey, that’s our book TOGETHER!”  Since we usually read a chapter or two at a time, I was tired of waiting to see what happened next.

The book also comes with a free audio book download that you can load right to your ipod or computer!  Since my kids are audio lovers, this is a great feature!  Bottom line:  This is a great educational and engaging book that brings the era of the slave trade alive.  It is so important for our children to understand this part of history, to learn from its grave mistakes and injustices as well as those heroes that risked their lives for the freedom of all people.
